Skillset of the Digital Age
A SoundCloud recording
Android, Snapchat, Youtube, Facebook, tablets, Smart phone, Instagram. The early 2000’s the start of the millennium none of those words had any meaning. Now, fifteen years later, they are all billion dollar companies or billion dollar products. Welcome to Information Age. This modern world full of high tech gadgets and ready accessed information is not slowing down with exponential grown in data annually, digital communications allows for globalisation to be forever on the rise. So what happens to the teachers in this fast paced, mass media faced jungle. How do I teach my students to navigate confidently, through this 21st century landscape? What do I teach them? What skills do I need to accomplish this challenge? Well, with the arrival of the Internet and accompanying technologies, information, media and technology skills are a must. This not only involves being able to communicate through such technology effectively but also being able to decode information presented from them. Manipulation, plays a big part in this new world, whether it be simple advertising, photo-imaging or twisting news stories. I would always want my students to be critically analysing their surroundings so as not to be led astray. Innovation skills teamed with flexibility are also a must. This world moves at such a rapid pace I constantly have to be an active citizen and keep up to date for my students. The teacher’s role in this age is not an “all knowing being” unlike that of the industrial age, information is universal. So a flexibility to deal with the constant changes and updates and installs is vital along with innovation skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and problem solving. These are all idea generating skills. And this, I believe is the core of the information age. This process of being able to think of something new. Having the skillset to generate the right idea and using critical thinking and problem solving techniques to see it through. Active, involved and critically engaged in the world around them is what I hope for my students and hence what I have to exhibit.
